Chihuahua

Graceful, alert and swift-moving with a saucy expression, Chihuahuas are highly intelligent and should not be underestimated even though small in size. The breed can be any color – solid, marked or splashed and the coat may be long or short. These sassy little dogs are well known as “purse dogs” like the famous Bruiser in the movie Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon.
The Chihuahua’s history is shrouded in mystery, but some believe he originated from the Fennec Fox, a very small animal with big eyes and ears, which could explain the tiny frame, luminous eyes and large ears on the breed today. Chihuahua’s were used in religious ceremonies and were pets to the upper class. The breed derives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where the earliest specimens of the breed were found.

Chihuahuas are alert dogs with terrier-like qualities. They are good with families if the children are gentle and patient. Because of their small size, they require little exercise and are good city dogs, but can be sensitive to cold temperatures. Smooth coated Chihuahuas need very little grooming due to their short hair. Long coats need occasional brushing but still require minimal grooming.

El Labrador Retriever está dotado de un gran olfato, característica que ha hecho que la policía, el ejército y aduanas se interesen por él. Tiene una gran capacidad para detectar cualquier tipo de objetos y sustancias, por ello se le utiliza para localizar drogas y explosivos. También ha prestado sus servicios como perro lazarillo o para buscar supervivientes entre los escombros.
Se especula que el Labrador Retriever proviene de la isla de Terranova, en la que hacia el siglo XVIII los antepasados de este perro se usaban para la caza. Un siglo más tarde se exportó a Gran Bretaña y los aristócratas lo usaron principalmente como perro cobrador y de pelea. A principios del siglo XX el estándar de la raza se acabó de establecer y hoy en día se ha convertido en una mascota bastante común. Sus antepasados cazadores no se han perdido y este perro ha estado mucho tiempo ejerciendo el trabajo de perro de caza de faisanes, de patos y de otras aves salvajes.

El Labrador Retriever es un perro enérgico, complaciente y cariñoso con su gente. Es obediente y se adapta bien a la vida familiar, necesita estar integrado a ella. Está dotado de una gran memoria y es fácil de adiestrar. Disfruta el juego con los niños y chapotear en el agua. No le gustan la soledad y la indiferencia, si se pasa muchas horas solo puede causar algún destrozo.

El Labrador Retriever es fuerte, compacto, ancho y de lomo corto. Tiene unas extremidades bien desarrolladas y de fuerte osamenta. Sus pies compactos y redondos le ayudan a ser un buen nadador. Las orejas le caen junto a la cabeza y tiene una cola gruesa en la base que se va afilando progresivamente. Está recubierto por un pelo corto, denso, áspero e impermeable que puede ser de color negro, amarillo o marrón.

El Labrador Retriever es una raza muy activa y hace falta proporcionarle paseos y juegos regulares. El ejercicio forma parte de su bienestar tanto físico (tiende al sobrepeso) como mental. Si el perro se aburre esto se puede manifestar en forma de conducta destructiva.
El cepillado es efectivo para arrancar el pelo muerto y mantener el pelaje saludable y brillante. Al Labrador Retriever hace falta cepillarlo con frecuencia.

This versatile hunting breed comes in three colors – yellow, black and chocolate – and because of his aptitude to please his master they excel as guide dogs for the blind, as part of search-and-rescue teams or in narcotics detection with law enforcement.

Labrador Retrievers, originally from Newfoundland, were initially used in work alongside fisherman, helping to pull in nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines. After being crossed with Setters, Spaniels and other Retrievers, the Labrador Retriever honed its skills as a true retriever. From this point in the breed’s history, “Labs,” as they are affectionately called, were bred primarily to perform as an efficient retriever of game, with a stable temperament suitable for a variety of activities beyond hunting.

An ideal sporting and family dog, the Labrador Retriever thrives as part of an active family or as a trusted hunting companion. A double-coated breed which sheds seasonally, regular grooming keeps his coat at its water-resistant best. Because of his even temperament and trainability millions of Americans own a Labrador Retriever as a pet.

Beagle

A sturdy hunting dog, the Beagle should look like a foxhound in miniature. His hunting ability, combined with a merry personality, has made the Beagle one of the most popular dogs in the United States according to AKC® Registration Statistics. The most famous Beagle of all is Snoopy from the comic strip “Peanuts.” Today’s Beagle comes in two height varieties (13 in. and 15 in.) and any true hound color, including tri-color, red and white and lemon.

In the 1500s, most English gentleman had packs of hounds. Larger hounds tracked deer, while smaller ones went after rabbits. These were the first Beagles. The origin of the name “Beagle” may have been derived from the French term “be’geule,” referring to the baying voice of the hounds when in pursuit of game, or possibly the diminutive size of the hound.

Beagles are happy-go-lucky and friendly, making them a wonderful family pet. They are also favored for their compact size and short easy to care for coat. Since they lived in packs for hundreds of years, they naturally enjoy the company of other dogs and humans. Curious and comedic, they often follow their noses-which can lead to some mischief if they are not provided with daily activity.

Border Collie

Se especula que el Border-Collie se introdujo en el siglo V a.C. en Gran Bretaña por las tribus celtas que viajaban por toda Europa. El Border Collie es trabajador, fiel, vital y muy inteligente. Su capacidad de aprendizaje es altísima y se muestra muy sumiso con su dueño. Es muy reservado con los extraños pero no está demasiado dado a la guarda o a la defensa. Se adapta muy bien a la vida en familia, ya sea con humanos o con otras mascotas.

El Border-Collie es un perro bien proporcionado y armonioso. Su cuerpo es largo y atlético, y posee unas extremidades fuertes y musculosas. Tiene la cabeza ancha y las orejas medianas y erguidas. La cola es moderadamente larga y la lleva algo levantada, pero nunca sobre la espalda. Su pelaje generalmente es de longitud mediana y los colores más comunes son el negro, el negro y blanco y el blanco y fuego. También hay la variedad de pelo corto.

Border Collie

The workaholic of the dog world, the Border Collie is the world’s premier sheep herder, prized for its intelligence, extraordinary instinct and working ability. Medium-sized and athletic, the breed controls stock with stalking movement and an intense gaze known as “eye.” The Border Collie coat can be rough or smooth and includes any color in bi-color, tri-color, merle, sable, or solid patterns.

In the border country between Scotland and England, Border Collies (first classified as the “Scotch Sheep Dog”) were invaluable to shepherds by allowing them to maintain large flocks of sheep. The breed as we know it today has been around for more than 100 years. In the second half of the 19th century, Queen Victoria spotted a Border Collie and became an active enthusiast. At this point, the divergence between our modern Collie and the Border Collie began.

This high-drive breed is extremely energetic and requires exercise beyond just a walk around the block or a romp in the yard. They thrive when they have a job to do and space to run. Due to their tendency to herd objects and people, they do best with mature, well-behaved children. They love their families, but may be somewhat reserved with strangers. They are seasonal shedders, and require regular brushing.

The Dachshund, meaning “badger dog” in German, is a lively breed with a friendly personality and keen sense of smell. Known for their long and low bodies, they are eager hunters that excel in both above- and below-ground work. One of the most popular breeds according to AKC® Registration Statistics, they come in three different coat varieties (Smooth, Wirehaired or Longhaired) and can be miniature or standard size.

Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany. The goal was to create a fearless, elongated dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers.

Dachshunds are lovable, playful companions, and an ideal pet for many homes, including those with children with appropriate supervision. They require moderate exercise, and can adapt to most living environments. Depending on their coat type, Dachshunds may need regular grooming.

Teckel

Por el nombre de Teckel o Dachshund muchos no sabrán de qué perro se está hablando, lo cierto es que la mayoría de nosotros le conoce por su apodo gastónomico perro salchicha.

El Teckel es equilibrado, de fuerte personalidad y muy ladrador. A veces es tenaz y testarudo. Se dice que es un perro juguetón, con iniciativa y bastante sociable aunque a veces puede ser desconfiado con ciertas personas. Es bueno con los niños y con los mayores y le gusta que le mimen y le premien. Se adapta con facilidad a entornos muy diferentes.

Existen tres variedades de Teckel en relación al pelo: el de pelo corto, el de pelo largo y el de pelo duro. Dentro de estas tres variedades también existen tres tamaños: el estándar, el enano y el kaninchen.
El Teckel es un perro bajo, alargado, compacto y de patas cortas en relación con el cuerpo. Tiene la cabeza alargada y las orejas implantadas altas, hacia atrás y caídas. La cola es larga y está implantada en la prolongación de la línea de la espalda.

Algunos Teckel tienden a engordar, ya sea por falta de ejercicio o por sus caprichos alimentarios.
Es recomendable educar a este perro con firmeza para que sepa desde un principio quién manda.
