POODLE

The Poodle, though often equated to the beauty with no brains, is exceptionally smart, active and excels in obedience training. The breed comes in three size varieties, which may contribute to why Poodle is one of the most popular breeds according to AKC® Registration statistics. Poodles can be a variety of solid colors, including white, black, apricot and gray, but never parti-colored.

The breed originated in Germany as a water retriever. The stylish “Poodle clip” was designed by hunters to help the dogs move through the water more efficiently. The patches of hair left on the body are meant to protect vital organs and joints which are susceptible to cold. The Standard variety is the oldest of the three varieties. The Miniature variety may have been used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle was often used in performances and circuses.

The Poodle can accommodate nearly any size living quarters. His hypoallergenic coat may reduce allergic reactions, but requires regular professional grooming. The Poodle is an active breed and requires daily exercise.

Shih Tzu

El Shih Tzu es originario de China donde había sido un animal sagrado en los palacios. Sus ancestros son unos perros procedentes del Tíbet llamados Lhassa Apso, que el Dalai lama habría regalado a los emperadores chinos hacia el siglo XVII. Debido al aislacionismo chino, los cruces de razas se llevaban muy en secreto, pero se supone que estos perros tibetanos se cruzaron con el Pekinés dando como resultado el Shih Tzu. Hasta principios del siglo XX el Shih Tzu no se conoció fuera de China.

El Shih Tzu es independiente, juguetón, curioso y siempre intentará que se haga su voluntad. Le encanta estar pegado a sus dueños y ser mimado pero también le gusta disfrutar de cierta libertad. A veces puede parecer que ignore las órdenes, hay que mandarlo con amabilidad y firmeza para que surga efecto. Es un perro muy sociable, tanto con perros como con otros animales, especialmente los gatos. Con los extraños se muestra afable.

El Shih Tzu requiere un cuidado de pelo diario, ya sea para prevenir que se le enmarañe o para evitar rasguños en los ojos. Es un perro que también demanda una limpieza regular de la dentadura. Es recomendable que no esté expuesto a altas temperaturas y limpiar las deposiciones para evitar que se las coma.

Shih Tzu

A compact and solid dog, the Shih Tzu’s long, flowing double coat is its most distinctive feature. The word Shih Tzu means “lion” and although this dog is sweet and playful, he is not afraid to stand up for himself! One of the most popular dogs in the United States according to AKC® Registration Statistics, this portable pooch has a distinctively arrogant carriage with his head well up and tail curved over the back. All colors of Shih Tzu are allowed.

Cherished by Chinese royals as prized house pets for over a thousand years, it is believed to have descended from crossing the Lhasa Apso or Tibetan mountain dog and Pekingese. The Shih Tzu was the house pet for most of the Ming Dynasty and was discovered by soldiers in England during World War II.

As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is companion and house pet, he should be lively, alert, friendly and trusting towards all. He requires minimal exercise, but his long, luxurious coat needs daily brushing and maintenance.

 Dobermann

Los primeros Dobermann aparecieron allá por 1885 de mano de su creador Friedrich Louis Dobermann, un alemán pluriempleado que llenaba las horas trabajando en el matadero, recaudando impuestos y ejerciendo de encargado en la perrera. A menudo tenía que transportar grandes sumas de dinero por los bosques de Turingia y para evitar los asaltos, decidió rodearse de perros firmes y fuertes. No se sabe exactamente que perros utilizó para crear la raza, fue todo muy rudimentario y no dejó ningún escrito. Pronto la fama de sus perros llegó a oídos cinófilos, que se interesaron por el nuevo perro y siguieron mejorando la raza.

El Dobermann es inteligente, dominante, altivo, sensato y con un fuerte carácter. Es independiente y a la vez siente un gran apego por sus dueños. Tiene un alto instinto de protección del territorio por lo que es un buen perro para la vigilancia. También es un perro observador y con una gran memoria. Se lleva bien con los niños si éstos se comportan correctamente.

Debido al carácter del Dobermann, su dueño ha de ser firme y autoritario, y ha de saber tener calma y paciencia con el perro. El Dobermann tiene un pelo muy corto y no le conviene un clima demasiado frío.

Doberman

A square, medium-sized dog, the Doberman Pinscher is muscular and possesses great endurance and speed. He is elegant in appearance and reflects great nobility and temperament. The properly bred and trained Doberman has proved itself to be a friend and guardian, and his intelligence and ability to absorb and retain training have brought him into demand as a police and war dog. The Doberman’s short, hard coat can be black, red, blue and fawn.

Although the roots of the breed are relatively obscure, it is thought that the Doberman Pinscher originated in Germany around 1900, taking its name from tax collector Louis Dobermann of Apolda, who desired a medium size dog to perform as a guard dog as well as companion. Breeds utilized to develop the Doberman Pinscher may have included the old shorthaired shepherd, Rottweiler, Black and Tan Terrier and the German Pinscher.

The Doberman Pinscher is known to be energetic, watchful, fearless and obedient. He is ready to give prompt alarm (and back up that warning) but is also affectionate, obedient and loyal. The breed requires regular exercise, but needs only minimal grooming for his short coat.

Welsh Corgi Pembroke

Al Welsh Corgi Pembroke a menudo se lo confunde con el Welsh Corgi Cardigan. Este último, es un poco más largo y grande, tiene una cola larga y tupida y unas orejas grandes y redondeadas. En cambio, el Pembroke es un poco más pequeño y ligero, con unas orejas más pequeñas y puntiagudas y con una cola muy corta.

El Welsh Corgi Pembroke es franco, directo, muy equilibrado, cariñoso e inteligente. Es un perro valiente y a veces, para mostrar su entusiasmo, puede que se pase con los ladridos. Le gusta hacer el payaso pero puede estar tranquilo y calmado, razones por las que es un compañero ideal para las personas mayores y los niños.

El Welsh Corgi Pembroke se adapta fácilmente a todos los ambientes y no necesita hacer grandes dosis de ejercicio, puede pasar todo el día en casa a condición que la salida que haga sea de calidad. Hay que hacerlo correr y jugar.
Su pelaje espeso no requiere ningún cuidado especial, con cepillarlo una vez a la semana con un cepillo de cerdas duras ya es suficiente.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Low-set, strong and sturdily built, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi gives an impression of substance in a small space. He is one of the most agreeable small house dogs, as well as an avid competitor in many dog sports, including conformation, herding and obedience. The Pembroke Corgi is a separate breed from the Cardigan Corgi, possessing a shorter body and straighter, lighter boned legs. His ears are pointed at the tip and stand erect, and he has a short tail. The coat can be red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings.

The Corgi from Pembrokeshire is a breed of considerable antiquity. The direct ancestors of the Pembroke were brought across the Channel in 1107 by Flemish weavers. The early progenitor is said to have had a resemblance to the old Schipperkes, and sprang from the same family that includes the Keeshond, Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow Chow, Norwegian Elkhound and Finnish Spitz.

Bold and friendly, the Pembroke responds well to training and loves his family, but he may try to herd you! He thrives on farms, but can adapt to a variety of living situations if given regular exercise. This breed also requires routine brushing.

Shar Pei

Los ancestros del Shar Pei se remontan a la dinastía Han (206 a.C.-220 d.C.). Eran unos perros robustos que vagaban por las calles en busca de comida y a diferencia del Shar Pei actual, tenían la piel completamente firme. Muchos siglos después, en Dah Let (China del Sur) se empezó a utilizar, en combates de perros, un ejemplar mediano, de mandíbulas potentes y de piel suelta (para reducir la gravedad de las mordeduras) que más adelante ya se conocería como Shar Pei. Con la llegada del comunismo, la raza estuvo en peligro de extinción hasta que los americanos descubrieron ese nuevo animal, se hicieron con algunos ejemplares y empezaron a abrir criaderos.

El Shar Pei es un perro muy inteligente y, enseñado bien desde pequeño, aprende rápido lo que está bien y lo que está mal. Es tranquilo, respetuoso, limpio, juguetón, fiel y sobre todo muy cariñoso y nada ladrador. Es un perro maravilloso para estar con niños y no suelen tener ningún problema con otros animales domésticos. Como cualquier perro, es muy importante ofrecerle una buena sociabilización desde pequeño, tanto con otras personas como con otros perros.

Como cualquier animal doméstico, es necesario educar al Shar Pei desde cachorro. El dueño ha de seguir una rutina alimentaria para no alterar su delicado sistema digestivo. Se recomienda un pienso de gama alta y bajo en proteína animal, ya que no lo tolera bien y, un exceso de proteína animal, podría perjudicar su salud además de provocar alergia.
El Shar Pei detesta el frío pero le encanta tumbarse al sol.
Tiene una grasa corporal que le protege contra muchos bichitos y por eso solo se aconseja bañarlo una vez o dos como máximo al año, porque tarda mucho en volver a recuperar esa grasa tan especial.
Después de un largo paseo, es recomendable limpiarle con mucho cuidado sus ojos y oídos y pasarle una toallita húmeda por su pelaje para limpiarlo de cualquier suciedad.

Shar-Pei

Immediately recognizable due to their unique “hippopotamus” head shape, profile and wrinkles, the Shar-Pei is an ancient breed that is usually aloof and standoffish with strangers, but devoted to his family. Their name “Shar-Pei” means sandy coat and their coat should be offstanding and harsh. Any solid color and sable is acceptable and none of these is preferred over the others. Today, the Shar-Pei is exhibited in conformation, agility, obedience and tracking.

Originally a multipurpose Chinese farm dog, many of the breed’s characteristics relate to that work. Their moderate sound structure allowed them to be perimeter guard dogs, working all day. They have retained vermin catching, herding and tracking skills, as their role on the farms was diverse. Physically, the Chinese believed the breed’s scowl and the black pigmented mouth would scare off evil spirits and their imposing presence meant that most were never challenged.

An intelligent and often stubborn breed, Shar Pei ownership needs careful consideration. They are bright and learn quickly, but early training and socialization are important, as is daily exercise. Shar-Pei are clean dogs that require little more grooming than an occasional bath, regular ear cleaning and toe nail clipping.

Chihuahua

El Chihuahua es una de las razas más pequeñas que existen. Actualmente, el perro más pequeño del mundo registrado en el Libro Mundial de los Record Guiness es una Chihuahua residente en Florida (Estados Unidos) llamada Heaven Sent Brandy y que mide 15,5 cm (desde la nariz a la punta de la cola).

Los orígenes del Chihuahua son susceptibles a crear polémica. La hipótesis más aceptada es la que expone que la raza procede del techichi, un perro criado por los toltecas, pueblo que precedió a los aztecas en el centro de México. Hacia 1850, en el pueblo de Casas Grandes (perteneciente al estado de Chihuahua) los campesinos mexicanos vendían a los turistas estadounidenses unos perros parecidos a las antiguas representaciones aztecas del techichi. A partir de entonces, a estos perros se les empezó a conocer como Chihuahuas.

El carácter del Chihuahua varía mucho según el ambiente familiar que le rodee. Puede ser cariñoso y tierno como juguetón y caprichoso. A pesar de ello, al Chihuahua se le conoce por ser un perro inteligente, tenaz, malicioso, astuto, muy observador y que sabe salirse siempre con la suya. Le gusta la compañía de perros de su misma raza.

A pesar de su reducido tamaño, lo ideal sería tener un jardín para que el Chihuahua pudiera moverse a sus anchas. Aunque se adapta perfectamente a la vida de interior.
También hay que tener en cuenta que si se le mima demasiado se puede volver frágil, quejica, caprichoso e hipernervioso.
